Hearing Services The Mid-Atlantic Hearing & Balance Center offers patients a highly specialized, comprehensive program for partial or total hearing loss. The program is led by Dr. Lassen, one of the region's most experienced neurotologists. Through a partnership between Bon Secours Health System and Lakeview Medical Center, the Mid-Atlantic Hearing & Balance Center offers patients state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options for hearing loss. Special hearing loss treatments include:
Cochlear implants – a Cochlear implant is an electronic device completely different from a hearing aid. It helps to provide a sense of sound to those who are profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing. This implant may work as a useful representation of sounds in the environment and help one to understand speech. Implantable middle ear devices- Implantable middle ear devices are hearing devices based on mechanics rather than relying on electricity and produce a clearer and more natural sound by eliminating feedback that traditional hearing aids may produce. This device uses a tiny electromagnet to create a magnetic field within the middle ear which increases the vibrations of the three middle ear bones. Implantable ear devices are usually recommended for patients with hearing loss too severe for conventional hearing aids, yet not sever enough for cochlear implants. BAHA (osseointegrated hearing devices)- BAHA (Bone anchored hearing aids) are often used instead of traditional bone conduction hearing aids, which eliminate the need for the headband. A process known as osseointegration takes place over several months allowing the titanium fixture (implanted in the mastoid bone) and surrounding tissue to bond after undergoing a minor outpatient surgical procedure. Digital hearing aids- Hearing aids which contain digital processing of sound have been proven to improve sound clarity and word recognition. Automatic volume control for each individual enables one to feel more comfortable and have a better overall sound quality in different sound environments. Otosclerosis treatment- Otosclerosis is a condition which affects the middle ear and results in hearing loss over time. Numerous surgical procedures are available for correcting Otosclerosis. Today, most surgery involves removing all or part of the stapes (bone in the middle ear) and replacing it with a prosthesis.
